The beauty of the first Islamic lamps from Fustat (Cairo)

The upper section of a lamp is usually covered in decoration. On the majority of unglazed lamps, the style and ornamental motifs are based on local heritage (Byzantine-Coptic patterns). However, some unglazed examples and the bulk of glazed specimens do not follow early Christian tradition and instead reflect the influence of the Abbasid or Samara style of ornamentations.
This small molded oil lamp dating to the 9th-10th centuries it’s the oldest type of Islamic oil lamp that was found in Fustat (medieval Cairo), and the lamps resembles to its Christian forerunners, is the oldest kind of Islamic oil lamp unearthed in fustat. The intricate relief patterns adorning the top of the lamp as you can see in. Lamps consist of abstracted flora, including stylized grape vines and a palm tree.
